Grand Hotel – Oslo, Norway

I had the privilege of staying at the Grand hotel for one night. I arrived around two in the afternoon and he arrived around five. Our room wasn’t ready yet as the check in time wasn’t until three o’clock. I know I got there early so I didn’t mind waiting in the Grand Café after I left my belongings in the storage room. Since I’m taking the train directly to the airport the next day I brought my two suitcases with me.

The staff were being so cooperative and very kind – it feels like as if I’ve been welcomed home. One of the receptionists at the hotel even came by the café just to tell me my room was ready, but since I was in the middle of a meeting I couldn’t leave and check in. However, the receptionist kindly helped me check in by bringing my luggages into my room.

Grand hotel is located in the heart of Oslo, in Karl Johan to be more exact – only 500 meters away from the Royal Palace.

The hotel has 292 rooms all together including 54 suites. Almost all hotelrooms are now non-smoking. Did you know the hotel now offers an entire Ladies Floor? They are all individually designed rooms dedicated to their female guests. Spa, beauty products, fresh fruit, yoga mats and a selection of magazines are just some of the little extras you’ll find there.

A rich breakfast buffet is served at the Grand Café every morning. They also offer a popular dinner menu with a wide selection of regional specialties inspired by the seasonal Norwegian tastes. The hotel has a second restaurant called Palmen – there you can enjoy a delicious lunch or an afternoon tea with your loved ones. Other facilities such as a rooftop bar, a spa with a sauna, a pool and a steam room can also be found at the hotel.

As I stepped into my room I saw a double layered fruit platter that the hotel had prepared for our arrival. And the most beautiful room that goes pretty well with the rest of the design of the hotel. Looking to the left side of the room I see my luggages nicely placed by the bed – I felt home.

My deluxe room was located in the third floor – in the older part of the building facing inwards with a large window. The room is approx. 40 sqm. big and is fully and beautifully furnished with a large working desk, two sofas, a coffee table, nightstands, drawers and closets.

The room is also equipped with a coffee and tea maker, bathrobes and slippers, LCD flatscreen TV and a minibar. All guests can enjoy free Wi-Fi as well as free admission to the spa and fitness area. The room has a separated bathroom with a bathtub.

The bed was too comfortable, I slept like a baby throughout the night. The next day I had breakfast at the Grand Café – not only do they serve delicious food, but the place had an interesting venue with a lot of history. Our world-famous dramatist, Henrik Ibsen used to go there for lunch with some of the most famous writers, artists, academics and diplomats of the day.

The paintings on the walls, the chairs, the tables – everything about that place was just magical. It’s like traveling back in time. I read an article on the internet somewhere saying that they will shut down Grand Café soon – I do hope that that won’t happen. Later in the morning, right before noon Astrid and Andreas came by to say their Good byes.

Grand hotel, Thank you for letting me stay here! I got to relax and I had a good night sleep – that’s exactly what I needed before my long flight to the Philippines.
